John 1:8

Greek	οὐκ ἦνplugin-autotooltip__default plugin-autotooltip_bigεἰμί greek εἰμί is the first person singular verb for “to be” (εἶναι [the infinitive form] = “to be”). It an irregular verb, and, like English, changes significantly between person and tense. For example εἰμί is the word for am and ἦν is the word for was, e.g. ἐκεῖνος τὸplugin-autotooltip__default plugin-autotooltip_bigὁ greek The definite article φῶς, ἀλλ’ ἵνα μαρτυρήσῃ περὶ τοῦplugin-autotooltip__default plugin-autotooltip_bigὁ greek The definite article φωτός.
ESV	He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light.
NIV	He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.
NLT	John himself was not the light; he was simply a witness to tell about the light.
KJV	He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.
