In those days Peter stood up among the believers (a group numbering about a hundred and twenty)

and said, “Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled which the Holy Spirit spoke long ago through the mouth of David concerning Judas, who served as guide for those who arrested Jesus–

he was one of our number and shared in this ministry.“

(With the reward he got for his wickedness, Judas bought a field; there he fell headlong, his body burst open and all his intestines spilled out.
|
| 19 |
Everyone in Jerusalem heard about this, so they called that field in their language Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.)
|
| 20 |
“For,” said Peter, “it is written in the book of Psalms, ”'May his place be deserted; let there be no one to dwell in it,' and, “'May another take his place of leadership.'
|
| 21 |
Therefore it is necessary to choose one of the men who have been with us the whole time the Lord Jesus went in and out among us,
|
| 22 |
beginning from John's baptism to the time when Jesus was taken up from us. For one of these must become a witness with us of his resurrection.“
|
| 23 |
So they proposed two men: Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and Matthias.
|

Then they prayed, “Lord, you know everyone's heart. Show us which of these two you have chosen
|
| 25 |
to take over this apostolic ministry, which Judas left to go where he belongs.“
|
| 26 |
Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias; so he was added to the eleven apostles.
|

In my first book I told you, Theophilus, about everything Jesus began to do and teach
|

until the day he was taken up to heaven after giving his chosen apostles further instructions through the Holy Spirit.

During the forty days after his crucifixion, he appeared to the apostles from time to time, and he proved to them in many ways that he was actually alive. And he talked to them about the Kingdom of God.

Once when he was eating with them, he commanded them, “Do not leave Jerusalem until the Father sends you the gift he promised, as I told you before.
|
| 5 |
John baptized with water, but in just a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.“
|
| 6 |
So when the apostles were with Jesus, they kept asking him, “Lord, has the time come for you to free Israel and restore our kingdom?”
|
| 7 |
He replied, “The Father alone has the authority to set those dates and times, and they are not for you to know.
|
| 8 |
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere– in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.“

After saying this, he was taken up into a cloud while they were watching, and they could no longer see him.
|
| 10 |
As they strained to see him rising into heaven, two white-robed men suddenly stood among them.
|
| 11 |
“Men of Galilee,” they said, “why are you standing here staring into heaven? Jesus has been taken from you into heaven, but someday he will return from heaven in the same way you saw him go!”
|
| 12 |
Then the apostles returned to Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives, a distance of half a mile.
|
| 13 |
When they arrived, they went to the upstairs room of the house where they were staying.Here are the names of those who were present: Peter, John, James, Andrew, Philip, Thomas, Bartholomew, Matthew, James (son of Alphaeus), Simon (the Zealot), and Judas (son of James).

They all met together and were constantly united in prayer, along with Mary the mother of Jesus, several other women, and the brothers of Jesus.
|

During this time, when about 120 believers were together in one place, Peter stood up and addressed them.
|
| 16 |
“Brothers,” he said, “the Scriptures had to be fulfilled concerning Judas, who guided those who arrested Jesus. This was predicted long ago by the Holy Spirit, speaking through King David.
|
| 17 |
Judas was one of us and shared in the ministry with us.“
|
| 18 |
(Judas had bought a field with the money he received for his treachery. Falling headfirst there, his body split open, spilling out all his intestines.
|
| 19 |
The news of his death spread to all the people of Jerusalem, and they gave the place the Aramaic name [Akeldama,] which means “Field of Blood.”)

| 20 |
Peter continued, “This was written in the book of Psalms, where it says, 'Let his home become desolate, with no one living in it.' It also says, 'Let someone else take his position.'
|
| 21 |
“So now we must choose a replacement for Judas from among the men who were with us the entire time we were traveling with the Lord Jesus–
|
| 22 |
from the time he was baptized by John until the day he was taken from us. Whoever is chosen will join us as a witness of Jesus' resurrection.“
|

So they nominated two men: Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and Matthias.
|

Then they all prayed, “O Lord, you know every heart. Show us which of these men you have chosen
|
| 25 |
as an apostle to replace Judas in this ministry, for he has deserted us and gone where he belongs.“

Then they cast lots, and Matthias was selected to become an apostle with the other eleven.

The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach,

Until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen:

To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God:

And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me.
|

For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.

When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?
|
| 7 |
And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.
|
| 8 |
But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
|
| 9 |
And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.
|
| 10 |
And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel;
|
| 11 |
Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.
|
| 12 |
Then returned they unto Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is from Jerusalem a sabbath day's journey.
|
| 13 |
And when they were come in, they went up into an upper room, where abode both Peter, and James, and John, and Andrew, Philip, and Thomas, Bartholomew, and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon Zelotes, and Judas the brother of James.
|

These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.
|
| 15 |
And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples, and said, (the number of names together were about an hundred and twenty,)
|
| 16 |
Men and brethren, this scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake before concerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus.
|
| 17 |
For he was numbered with us, and had obtained part of this ministry.
|
| 18 |
Now this man purchased a field with the reward of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out.
|
| 19 |
And it was known unto all the dwellers at Jerusalem; insomuch as that field is called in their proper tongue, Aceldama, that is to say, The field of blood.
|
| 20 |
For it is written in the book of Psalms, Let his habitation be desolate, and let no man dwell therein: and his bishoprick let another take.
|
| 21 |
Wherefore of these men which have companied with us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us,
|
| 22 |
Beginning from the baptism of John, unto that same day that he was taken up from us, must one be ordained to be a witness with us of his resurrection.
|
| 23 |
And they appointed two, Joseph called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias.
|
| 24 |
And they prayed, and said, Thou, Lord, which knowest the hearts of all men, shew whether of these two thou hast chosen,
|
| 25 |
That he may take part of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place.
|
| 26 |
And they gave forth their lots; and the lot fell upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.
