He said this to show by what kind of death he was going to die.

So the crowd answered him, “We have heard from the Law that the Christ remains forever. How can you say that the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?”

So Jesus said to them, “The light is among you for a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you. The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going.
|
| 36 |
While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.“ When Jesus had said these things, he departed and hid himself from them.
|
| 37 |
Though he had done so many signs before them, they still did not believe in him,
|
| 38 |
so that the word spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: “Lord, who has believed what he heard from us, and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”
|
| 39 |
Therefore they could not believe. For again Isaiah said,
|
| 40 |
“He has blinded their eyes and hardened their heart, lest they see with their eyes, and understand with their heart, and turn, and I would heal them.”
|
| 41 |
Isaiah said these things because he saw his glory and spoke of him.
|
| 42 |
Nevertheless, many even of the authorities believed in him, but for fear of the Pharisees they did not confess it, so that they would not be put out of the synagogue;
|
| 43 |
for they loved the glory that comes from man more than the glory that comes from God.
|
| 44 |
And Jesus cried out and said, “Whoever believes in me, believes not in me but in him who sent me.
|
| 45 |
And whoever sees me sees him who sent me.
|
| 46 |
I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness.
|
| 47 |
If anyone hears my words and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world.
|
| 48 |
The one who rejects me and does not receive my words has a judge; the word that I have spoken will judge him on the last day.
|
| 49 |
For I have not spoken on my own authority, but the Father who sent me has himself given me a commandment- what to say and what to speak.
|
| 50 |
And I know that his commandment is eternal life. What I say, therefore, I say as the Father has told me.“

Six days before the Passover, Jesus arrived at Bethany, where Lazarus lived, whom Jesus had raised from the dead.
|

Here a dinner was given in Jesus' honor. Martha served, while Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with him.
|
| 3 |
Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus' feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.
|
| 4 |
But one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was later to betray him, objected,
|
| 5 |
“Why wasn't this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? It was worth a year's wages. ”
|
| 6 |
He did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was put into it.
|
| 7 |
“Leave her alone,” Jesus replied. “It was intended that she should save this perfume for the day of my burial.
|
| 8 |
You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me.“
|
| 9 |
Meanwhile a large crowd of Jews found out that Jesus was there and came, not only because of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead.
|
| 10 |
So the chief priests made plans to kill Lazarus as well,
|
| 11 |
for on account of him many of the Jews were going over to Jesus and putting their faith in him.
|
| 12 |
The next day the great crowd that had come for the Feast heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem.
|
| 13 |
They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!Blessed is the King of Israel!”
|
| 14 |
Jesus found a young donkey and sat upon it, as it is written,
|
| 15 |
“Do not be afraid, O Daughter of Zion; see, your king is coming, seated on a donkey's colt.”
|
| 16 |
At first his disciples did not understand all this. Only after Jesus was glorified did they realize that these things had been written about him and that they had done these things to him.
|
| 17 |
Now the crowd that was with him when he called Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to spread the word.
|
| 18 |
Many people, because they had heard that he had given this miraculous sign, went out to meet him.
|
| 19 |
So the Pharisees said to one another, “See, this is getting us nowhere. Look how the whole world has gone after him!”
|
| 20 |
Now there were some Greeks among those who went up to worship at the Feast.
|
| 21 |
They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, with a request. “Sir,” they said, “we would like to see Jesus.”
|
| 22 |
Philip went to tell Andrew; Andrew and Philip in turn told Jesus.
|
| 23 |
Jesus replied, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.
|
| 24 |
I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds.
|
| 25 |
The man who loves his life will lose it, while the man who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.
|
| 26 |
Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me.
|
| 27 |
“Now my heart is troubled, and what shall I say? 'Father, save me from this hour'? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour.
|
| 28 |
Father, glorify your name!“
|
| 29 |
Then a voice came from heaven, “I have glorified it, and will glorify it again.” The crowd that was there and heard it said it had thundered; others said an angel had spoken to him.
|
| 30 |
Jesus said, “This voice was for your benefit, not mine.
|
| 31 |
Now is the time for judgment on this world; now the prince of this world will be driven out.
|
| 32 |
But I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to myself.“
|
| 33 |
He said this to show the kind of death he was going to die.
|
| 34 |
The crowd spoke up, “We have heard from the Law that the Christ will remain forever, so how can you say, 'The Son of Man must be lifted up'? Who is this 'Son of Man'?”
|

Then Jesus told them, “You are going to have the light just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, before darkness overtakes you. The man who walks in the dark does not know where he is going.

Put your trust in the light while you have it, so that you may become sons of light.“ When he had finished speaking, Jesus left and hid himself from them.
|
| 37 |
Even after Jesus had done all these miraculous signs in their presence, they still would not believe in him.
|
| 38 |
This was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet: “Lord, who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”
|
| 39 |
For this reason they could not believe, because, as Isaiah says elsewhere:
|
| 40 |
“He has blinded their eyes and deadened their hearts, so they can neither see with their eyes, nor understand with their hearts, nor turn–and I would heal them.”
|
| 41 |
Isaiah said this because he saw Jesus' glory and spoke about him.
|
| 42 |
Yet at the same time many even among the leaders believed in him. But because of the Pharisees they would not confess their faith for fear they would be put out of the synagogue;
|
| 43 |
for they loved praise from men more than praise from God.
|
| 44 |
Then Jesus cried out, “When a man believes in me, he does not believe in me only, but in the one who sent me.
|
| 45 |
When he looks at me, he sees the one who sent me.
|
| 46 |
I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.
|
| 47 |
“As for the person who hears my words but does not keep them, I do not judge him. For I did not come to judge the world, but to save it.
|
| 48 |
There is a judge for the one who rejects me and does not accept my words; that very word which I spoke will condemn him at the last day.
|

For I did not speak of my own accord, but the Father who sent me commanded me what to say and how to say it.
|

I know that his command leads to eternal life. So whatever I say is just what the Father has told me to say.“

“That perfume was worth a year's wages. It should have been sold and the money given to the poor.”

Not that he cared for the poor– he was a thief, and since he was in charge of the disciples' money, he often stole some for himself.

Jesus replied, “Leave her alone. She did this in preparation for my burial.
|
| 8 |
You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me.“
|
| 9 |
When all the people heard of Jesus' arrival, they flocked to see him and also to see Lazarus, the man Jesus had raised from the dead.
|
| 10 |
Then the leading priests decided to kill Lazarus, too,
|
| 11 |
for it was because of him that many of the people had deserted them and believed in Jesus.
|
| 12 |
The next day, the news that Jesus was on the way to Jerusalem swept through the city. A large crowd of Passover visitors
|
| 13 |
took palm branches and went down the road to meet him. They shouted, “Praise God! Blessings on the one who comes in the name of the LORD! Hail to the King of Israel!”
|
| 14 |
Jesus found a young donkey and rode on it, fulfilling the prophecy that said:
|
| 15 |
“Don't be afraid, people of Jerusalem. Look, your King is coming, riding on a donkey's colt.”
|
| 16 |
His disciples didn't understand at the time that this was a fulfillment of prophecy. But after Jesus entered into his glory, they remembered what had happened and realized that these things had been written about him.
|
| 17 |
Many in the crowd had seen Jesus call Lazarus from the tomb, raising him from the dead, and they were telling others about it.
|
| 18 |
That was the reason so many went out to meet him– because they had heard about this miraculous sign.
|
| 19 |
Then the Pharisees said to each other, “There's nothing we can do. Look, everyone has gone after him!”
|
| 20 |
Some Greeks who had come to Jerusalem for the Passover celebration
|
| 21 |
paid a visit to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee. They said, “Sir, we want to meet Jesus.”
|
| 22 |
Philip told Andrew about it, and they went together to ask Jesus.
|
| 23 |
Jesus replied, “Now the time has come for the Son of Man to enter into his glory.
|
| 24 |
I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat is planted in the soil and dies, it remains alone. But its death will produce many new kernels– a plentiful harvest of new lives.
|
| 25 |
Those who love their life in this world will lose it. Those who care nothing for their life in this world will keep it for eternity.
|
| 26 |
Anyone who wants to be my disciple must follow me, because my servants must be where I am. And the Father will honor anyone who serves me.
|
| 27 |
“Now my soul is deeply troubled. Should I pray, 'Father, save me from this hour'? But this is the very reason I came!
|
| 28 |
Father, bring glory to your name.“ Then a voice spoke from heaven, saying, “I have already brought glory to my name, and I will do so again.”
|
| 29 |
When the crowd heard the voice, some thought it was thunder, while others declared an angel had spoken to him.
|
| 30 |
Then Jesus told them, “The voice was for your benefit, not mine.
|
| 31 |
The time for judging this world has come, when Satan, the ruler of this world, will be cast out.
|
| 32 |
And when I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw everyone to myself.“
|
| 33 |
He said this to indicate how he was going to die.
|
| 34 |
The crowd responded, “We understood from Scripture that the Messiah would live forever. How can you say the Son of Man will die? Just who is this Son of Man, anyway?”
|
| 35 |
Jesus replied, “My light will shine for you just a little longer. Walk in the light while you can, so the darkness will not overtake you. Those who walk in the darkness cannot see where they are going.
|
| 36 |
Put your trust in the light while there is still time; then you will become children of the light.“ After saying these things, Jesus went away and was hidden from them.
|
| 37 |
But despite all the miraculous signs Jesus had done, most of the people still did not believe in him.
|
| 38 |
This is exactly what Isaiah the prophet had predicted: “LORD, who has believed our message? To whom has the LORD revealed his powerful arm?”
|
| 39 |
But the people couldn't believe, for as Isaiah also said,
|
| 40 |
“The Lord has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts– so that their eyes cannot see, and their hearts cannot understand, and they cannot turn to me and have me heal them.”
|
| 41 |
Isaiah was referring to Jesus when he said this, because he saw the future and spoke of the Messiah's glory.
|
| 42 |
Many people did believe in him, however, including some of the Jewish leaders. But they wouldn't admit it for fear that the Pharisees would expel them from the synagogue.
|
| 43 |
For they loved human praise more than the praise of God.
|
| 44 |
Jesus shouted to the crowds, “If you trust me, you are trusting not only me, but also God who sent me.
|
| 45 |
For when you see me, you are seeing the one who sent me.
|
| 46 |
I have come as a light to shine in this dark world, so that all who put their trust in me will no longer remain in the dark.
|
| 47 |
I will not judge those who hear me but don't obey me, for I have come to save the world and not to judge it.
|
| 48 |
But all who reject me and my message will be judged on the day of judgment by the truth I have spoken.
|
| 49 |
I don't speak on my own authority. The Father who sent me has commanded me what to say and how to say it.
|
| 50 |
And I know his commands lead to eternal life; so I say whatever the Father tells me to say.“

For this cause the people also met him, for that they heard that he had done this miracle.

The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, Perceive ye how ye prevail nothing? behold, the world is gone after him.

He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal.

If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour.
