Now when David lived in his house, David said to Nathan the prophet, “Behold, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of the covenant of the LORD is under a tent.”

But that same night the word of the LORD came to Nathan,

“Go and tell my servant David, 'Thus says the LORD: It is not you who will build me a house to dwell in.

For I have not lived in a house since the day I brought up Israel to this day, but I have gone from tent to tent and from dwelling to dwelling.
|

In all places where I have moved with all Israel, did I speak a word with any of the judges of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd my people, saying, “Why have you not built me a house of cedar?”'
|
| 7 |
Now, therefore, thus shall you say to my servant David, 'Thus says the LORD of hosts, I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, to be prince over my people Israel,
|
| 8 |
and I have been with you wherever you have gone and have cut off all your enemies from before you. And I will make for you a name, like the name of the great ones of the earth.
|
| 9 |
And I will appoint a place for my people Israel and will plant them, that they may dwell in their own place and be disturbed no more. And violent men shall waste them no more, as formerly,
|
| 10 |
from the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel. And I will subdue all your enemies. Moreover, I declare to you that the LORD will build you a house.
|
| 11 |
When your days are fulfilled to walk with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, one of your own sons, and I will establish his kingdom.
|
| 12 |
He shall build a house for me, and I will establish his throne forever.
|
| 13 |
I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son. I will not take my steadfast love from him, as I took it from him who was before you,
|
| 14 |
but I will confirm him in my house and in my kingdom forever, and his throne shall be established forever.'“
|
| 15 |
In accordance with all these words, and in accordance with all this vision, Nathan spoke to David.
|
| 16 |
Then King David went in and sat before the LORD and said, “Who am I, O LORD God, and what is my house, that you have brought me thus far?
|
| 17 |
And this was a small thing in your eyes, O God. You have also spoken of your servant's house for a great while to come, and have shown me future generations, O LORD God!
|
| 18 |
And what more can David say to you for honoring your servant? For you know your servant.
|
| 19 |
For your servant's sake, O LORD, and according to your own heart, you have done all this greatness, in making known all these great things.
|
| 20 |
There is none like you, O LORD, and there is no God besides you, according to all that we have heard with our ears.
|
| 21 |
And who is like your people Israel, the one nation on earth whom God went to redeem to be his people, making for yourself a name for great and awesome things, in driving out nations before your people whom you redeemed from Egypt?
|
| 22 |
And you made your people Israel to be your people forever, and you, O LORD, became their God.
|
| 23 |
And now, O LORD, let the word that you have spoken concerning your servant and concerning his house be established forever, and do as you have spoken,
|
| 24 |
and your name will be established and magnified forever, saying, 'The LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, is Israel's God,' and the house of your servant David will be established before you.
|
| 25 |
For you, my God, have revealed to your servant that you will build a house for him. Therefore your servant has found courage to pray before you.
|
| 26 |
And now, O LORD, you are God, and you have promised this good thing to your servant.
|
| 27 |
Now you have been pleased to bless the house of your servant, that it may continue forever before you, for it is you, O LORD, who have blessed, and it is blessed forever.“

After David was settled in his palace, he said to Nathan the prophet, “Here I am, living in a palace of cedar, while the ark of the covenant of the LORD is under a tent.”

Nathan replied to David, “Whatever you have in mind, do it, for God is with you.”

That night the word of God came to Nathan, saying:

“Go and tell my servant David, 'This is what the LORD says: You are not the one to build me a house to dwell in.

I have not dwelt in a house from the day I brought Israel up out of Egypt to this day. I have moved from one tent site to another, from one dwelling place to another.
|

Wherever I have moved with all the Israelites, did I ever say to any of their leaders whom I commanded to shepherd my people, “Why have you not built me a house of cedar?”'
|

“Now then, tell my servant David, 'This is what the LORD Almighty says: I took you from the pasture and from following the flock, to be ruler over my people Israel.
|
| 8 |
I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have cut off all your enemies from before you. Now I will make your name like the names of the greatest men of the earth.
|
| 9 |
And I will provide a place for my people Israel and will plant them so that they can have a home of their own and no longer be disturbed. Wicked people will not oppress them anymore, as they did at the beginning
|
| 10 |
and have done ever since the time I appointed leaders over my people Israel. I will also subdue all your enemies. “'I declare to you that the LORD will build a house for you:
|
| 11 |
When your days are over and you go to be with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, one of your own sons, and I will establish his kingdom.
|
| 12 |
He is the one who will build a house for me, and I will establish his throne forever.
|
| 13 |
I will be his father, and he will be my son. I will never take my love away from him, as I took it away from your predecessor.
|

I will set him over my house and my kingdom forever; his throne will be established forever.'“

Nathan reported to David all the words of this entire revelation.
|

Then King David went in and sat before the LORD, and he said: “Who am I, O LORD God, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far?
|
| 17 |
And as if this were not enough in your sight, O God, you have spoken about the future of the house of your servant. You have looked on me as though I were the most exalted of men, O LORD God.
|
| 18 |
“What more can David say to you for honoring your servant? For you know your servant,
|
| 19 |
O LORD. For the sake of your servant and according to your will, you have done this great thing and made known all these great promises.
|
| 20 |
“There is no one like you, O LORD, and there is no God but you, as we have heard with our own ears.
|
| 21 |
And who is like your people Israel-the one nation on earth whose God went out to redeem a people for himself, and to make a name for yourself, and to perform great and awesome wonders by driving out nations from before your people, whom you redeemed from Egypt?
|

You made your people Israel your very own forever, and you, O LORD, have become their God.
|
| 23 |
“And now, LORD, let the promise you have made concerning your servant and his house be established forever. Do as you promised,
|

so that it will be established and that your name will be great forever. Then men will say, 'The LORD Almighty, the God over Israel, is Israel's God!' And the house of your servant David will be established before you.

“You, my God, have revealed to your servant that you will build a house for him. So your servant has found courage to pray to you.

O LORD, you are God! You have promised these good things to your servant.

When David was settled in his palace, he summoned Nathan the prophet. “Look,” David said, “I am living in a beautiful cedar palace, but the Ark of the LORD's Covenant is out there under a tent!”

Nathan replied to David, “Do whatever you have in mind, for God is with you.”

But that same night God said to Nathan,
|

“Go and tell my servant David, 'This is what the LORD has declared: You are not the one to build a house for me to live in.

I have never lived in a house, from the day I brought the Israelites out of Egypt until this very day. My home has always been a tent, moving from one place to another in a Tabernacle.
|

Yet no matter where I have gone with the Israelites, I have never once complained to Israel's leaders, the shepherds of my people. I have never asked them, “Why haven't you built me a beautiful cedar house?” '

“Now go and say to my servant David, 'This is what the LORD of Heaven's Armies has declared: I took you from tending sheep in the pasture and selected you to be the leader of my people Israel.
|

I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have destroyed all your enemies before your eyes. Now I will make your name as famous as anyone who has ever lived on the earth!
|

And I will provide a homeland for my people Israel, planting them in a secure place where they will never be disturbed. Evil nations won't oppress them as they've done in the past,
|
| 10 |
starting from the time I appointed judges to rule my people Israel. And I will defeat all your enemies. “ 'Furthermore, I declare that the LORD will build a house for you– a dynasty of kings!
|
| 11 |
For when you die and join your ancestors, I will raise up one of your descendants, one of your sons, and I will make his kingdom strong.
|
| 12 |
He is the one who will build a house– a temple– for me. And I will secure his throne forever.
|
| 13 |
I will be his father, and he will be my son. I will never take my favor from him as I took it from the one who ruled before you.
|
| 14 |
I will confirm him as king over my house and my kingdom for all time, and his throne will be secure forever.'“

So Nathan went back to David and told him everything the LORD had said in this vision.
|

Then King David went in and sat before the LORD and prayed, “Who am I, O LORD God, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far?
|
| 17 |
And now, O God, in addition to everything else, you speak of giving your servant a lasting dynasty! You speak as though I were someone very great, O LORD God!
|
| 18 |
“What more can I say to you about the way you have honored me? You know what your servant is really like.
|
| 19 |
For the sake of your servant, O LORD, and according to your will, you have done all these great things and have made them known.
|

“O LORD, there is no one like you. We have never even heard of another God like you!
|
| 21 |
What other nation on earth is like your people Israel? What other nation, O God, have you redeemed from slavery to be your own people? You made a great name for yourself when you redeemed your people from Egypt. You performed awesome miracles and drove out the nations that stood in their way.

You chose Israel to be your very own people forever, and you, O LORD, became their God.
|
| 23 |
“And now, O LORD, I am your servant; do as you have promised concerning me and my family. May it be a promise that will last forever.
|

And may your name be established and honored forever so that everyone will say, 'The LORD of Heaven's Armies, the God of Israel, is Israel's God!' And may the house of your servant David continue before you forever.

Therefore now, LORD, let the thing that thou hast spoken concerning thy servant and concerning his house be established for ever, and do as thou hast said.

Let it even be established, that thy name may be magnified for ever, saying, The LORD of hosts is the God of Israel, even a God to Israel: and let the house of David thy servant be established before thee.

For thou, O my God, hast told thy servant that thou wilt build him an house: therefore thy servant hath found in his heart to pray before thee.

And now, LORD, thou art God, and hast promised this goodness unto thy servant:
|
| 27 |
Now therefore let it please thee to bless the house of thy servant, that it may be before thee for ever: for thou blessest, O LORD, and it shall be blessed for ever.
