Then he went out from the land of the Chaldeans and lived in Haran. And after his father died, God removed him from there into this land in which you are now living.

And God spoke to this effect- that his offspring would be sojourners in a land belonging to others, who would enslave them and afflict them four hundred years.

'But I will judge the nation that they serve,' said God, 'and after that they shall come out and worship me in this place.'

And he gave him the covenant of circumcision. And so Abraham became the father of Isaac, and circumcised him on the eighth day, and Isaac became the father of Jacob, and Jacob of the twelve patriarchs.

“And the patriarchs, jealous of Joseph, sold him into Egypt; but God was with him
|
| 10 |
and rescued him out of all his afflictions and gave him favor and wisdom before Pharaoh, king of Egypt, who made him ruler over Egypt and over all his household.
|

Now there came a famine throughout all Egypt and Canaan, and great affliction, and our fathers could find no food.
|
| 12 |
But when Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent out our fathers on their first visit.
|
| 13 |
And on the second visit Joseph made himself known to his brothers, and Joseph's family became known to Pharaoh.
|
| 14 |
And Joseph sent and summoned Jacob his father and all his kindred, seventy-five persons in all.
|
| 15 |
And Jacob went down into Egypt, and he died, he and our fathers,
|
| 16 |
and they were carried back to Shechem and laid in the tomb that Abraham had bought for a sum of silver from the sons of Hamor in Shechem.
|

“But as the time of the promise drew near, which God had granted to Abraham, the people increased and multiplied in Egypt
|
| 18 |
until there arose over Egypt another king who did not know Joseph.
|
| 19 |
He dealt shrewdly with our race and forced our fathers to expose their infants, so that they would not be kept alive.
|
| 20 |
At this time Moses was born; and he was beautiful in God's sight. And he was brought up for three months in his father's house,
|
| 21 |
and when he was exposed, Pharaoh's daughter adopted him and brought him up as her own son.
|
| 22 |
And Moses was instructed in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and he was mighty in his words and deeds.
|
| 23 |
“When he was forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brothers, the children of Israel.
|
| 24 |
And seeing one of them being wronged, he defended the oppressed man and avenged him by striking down the Egyptian.
|
| 25 |
He supposed that his brothers would understand that God was giving them salvation by his hand, but they did not understand.
|
| 26 |
And on the following day he appeared to them as they were quarreling and tried to reconcile them, saying, 'Men, you are brothers. Why do you wrong each other?'
|
| 27 |
But the man who was wronging his neighbor thrust him aside, saying, 'Who made you a ruler and a judge over us?
|
| 28 |
Do you want to kill me as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?'
|
| 29 |
At this retort Moses fled and became an exile in the land of Midian, where he became the father of two sons.
|
| 30 |
“Now when forty years had passed, an angel appeared to him in the wilderness of Mount Sinai, in a flame of fire in a bush.
|
| 31 |
When Moses saw it, he was amazed at the sight, and as he drew near to look, there came the voice of the Lord:
|
| 32 |
'I am the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham and of Isaac and of Jacob.' And Moses trembled and did not dare to look.
|
| 33 |
Then the Lord said to him, 'Take off the sandals from your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.
|
| 34 |
I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt, and have heard their groaning, and I have come down to deliver them. And now come, I will send you to Egypt.'
|
| 35 |
“This Moses, whom they rejected, saying, 'Who made you a ruler and a judge?'- this man God sent as both ruler and redeemer by the hand of the angel who appeared to him in the bush.
|
| 36 |
This man led them out, performing wonders and signs in Egypt and at the Red Sea and in the wilderness for forty years.
|
| 37 |
This is the Moses who said to the Israelites, 'God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your brothers.'
|
| 38 |
This is the one who was in the congregation in the wilderness with the angel who spoke to him at Mount Sinai, and with our fathers. He received living oracles to give to us.
|
| 39 |
Our fathers refused to obey him, but thrust him aside, and in their hearts they turned to Egypt,
|
| 40 |
saying to Aaron, 'Make for us gods who will go before us. As for this Moses who led us out from the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.'
|
| 41 |
And they made a calf in those days, and offered a sacrifice to the idol and were rejoicing in the works of their hands.
|
| 42 |
But God turned away and gave them over to worship the host of heaven, as it is written in the book of the prophets: “' Did you bring to me slain beasts and sacrifices, during the forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel?
|
| 43 |
You took up the tent of Moloch and the star of your god Rephan, the images that you made to worship; and I will send you into exile beyond Babylon.'
|
| 44 |
“Our fathers had the tent of witness in the wilderness, just as he who spoke to Moses directed him to make it, according to the pattern that he had seen.
|
| 45 |
Our fathers in turn brought it in with Joshua when they dispossessed the nations that God drove out before our fathers. So it was until the days of David,
|
| 46 |
who found favor in the sight of God and asked to find a dwelling place for the God of Jacob.
|
| 47 |
But it was Solomon who built a house for him.
|
| 48 |
Yet the Most High does not dwell in houses made by hands, as the prophet says,
|
| 49 |
“'Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool. What kind of house will you build for me, says the Lord, or what is the place of my rest?
|
| 50 |
Did not my hand make all these things?'
|
| 51 |
“You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit. As your fathers did, so do you.
|
| 52 |
Which of the prophets did not your fathers persecute? And they killed those who announced beforehand the coming of the Righteous One, whom you have now betrayed and murdered,
|
| 53 |
you who received the law as delivered by angels and did not keep it.“
|
| 54 |
Now when they heard these things they were enraged, and they ground their teeth at him.
|
| 55 |
But he, full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God.
|
| 56 |
And he said, “Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.”
|
| 57 |
But they cried out with a loud voice and stopped their ears and rushed together at him.
|
| 58 |
Then they cast him out of the city and stoned him. And the witnesses laid down their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul.
|
| 59 |
And as they were stoning Stephen, he called out, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.”
|
| 60 |
And falling to his knees he cried out with a loud voice, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” And when he had said this, he fell asleep.

Then the high priest asked him, “Are these charges true?”
|
| 2 |
To this he replied: “Brothers and fathers, listen to me! The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham while he was still in Mesopotamia, before he lived in Haran.

'Leave your country and your people,' God said, 'and go to the land I will show you.'
|
| 4 |
“So he left the land of the Chaldeans and settled in Haran. After the death of his father, God sent him to this land where you are now living.
|
| 5 |
He gave him no inheritance here, not even a foot of ground. But God promised him that he and his descendants after him would possess the land, even though at that time Abraham had no child.
|
| 6 |
God spoke to him in this way: 'Your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own, and they will be enslaved and mistreated four hundred years.
|

But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves,' God said, 'and afterward they will come out of that country and worship me in this place.'
|

Then he gave Abraham the covenant of circumcision. And Abraham became the father of Isaac and circumcised him eight days after his birth. Later Isaac became the father of Jacob, and Jacob became the father of the twelve patriarchs.

“Because the patriarchs were jealous of Joseph, they sold him as a slave into Egypt. But God was with him
|
| 10 |
and rescued him from all his troubles. He gave Joseph wisdom and enabled him to gain the goodwill of Pharaoh king of Egypt; so he made him ruler over Egypt and all his palace.
|

“Then a famine struck all Egypt and Canaan, bringing great suffering, and our fathers could not find food.
|
| 12 |
When Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent our fathers on their first visit.

On their second visit, Joseph told his brothers who he was, and Pharaoh learned about Joseph's family.
|
| 14 |
After this, Joseph sent for his father Jacob and his whole family, seventy-five in all.
|

Then Jacob went down to Egypt, where he and our fathers died.

Their bodies were brought back to Shechem and placed in the tomb that Abraham had bought from the sons of Hamor at Shechem for a certain sum of money.

“As the time drew near for God to fulfill his promise to Abraham, the number of our people in Egypt greatly increased.
|
| 18 |
Then another king, who knew nothing about Joseph, became ruler of Egypt.
|
| 19 |
He dealt treacherously with our people and oppressed our forefathers by forcing them to throw out their newborn babies so that they would die.
|
| 20 |
“At that time Moses was born, and he was no ordinary child. For three months he was cared for in his father's house.
|
| 21 |
When he was placed outside, Pharaoh's daughter took him and brought him up as her own son.
|
| 22 |
Moses was educated in all the wisdom of the Egyptians and was powerful in speech and action.
|
| 23 |
“When Moses was forty years old, he decided to visit his fellow Israelites.
|
| 24 |
He saw one of them being mistreated by an Egyptian, so he went to his defense and avenged him by killing the Egyptian.
|
| 25 |
Moses thought that his own people would realize that God was using him to rescue them, but they did not.
|
| 26 |
The next day Moses came upon two Israelites who were fighting. He tried to reconcile them by saying, 'Men, you are brothers; why do you want to hurt each other?'
|
| 27 |
“But the man who was mistreating the other pushed Moses aside and said, 'Who made you ruler and judge over us?
|
| 28 |
Do you want to kill me as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?'
|
| 29 |
When Moses heard this, he fled to Midian, where he settled as a foreigner and had two sons.
|
| 30 |
“After forty years had passed, an angel appeared to Moses in the flames of a burning bush in the desert near Mount Sinai.
|
| 31 |
When he saw this, he was amazed at the sight. As he went over to look more closely, he heard the Lord's voice:
|
| 32 |
'I am the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.' Moses trembled with fear and did not dare to look.
|
| 33 |
“Then the Lord said to him, 'Take off your sandals; the place where you are standing is holy ground.
|
| 34 |
I have indeed seen the oppression of my people in Egypt. I have heard their groaning and have come down to set them free. Now come, I will send you back to Egypt.'
|
| 35 |
“This is the same Moses whom they had rejected with the words, 'Who made you ruler and judge?' He was sent to be their ruler and deliverer by God himself, through the angel who appeared to him in the bush.

He led them out of Egypt and did wonders and miraculous signs in Egypt, at the Red Sea and for forty years in the desert.

“This is that Moses who told the Israelites, 'God will send you a prophet like me from your own people.'
|
| 38 |
He was in the assembly in the desert, with the angel who spoke to him on Mount Sinai, and with our fathers; and he received living words to pass on to us.
|
| 39 |
“But our fathers refused to obey him. Instead, they rejected him and in their hearts turned back to Egypt.
|
| 40 |
They told Aaron, 'Make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who led us out of Egypt–we don't know what has happened to him!'

That was the time they made an idol in the form of a calf. They brought sacrifices to it and held a celebration in honor of what their hands had made.
|
| 42 |
But God turned away and gave them over to the worship of the heavenly bodies. This agrees with what is written in the book of the prophets: “'Did you bring me sacrifices and offerings forty years in the desert, O house of Israel?
|
| 43 |
You have lifted up the shrine of Molech and the star of your god Rephan, the idols you made to worship. Therefore I will send you into exile' beyond Babylon.
|
| 44 |
“Our forefathers had the tabernacle of the Testimony with them in the desert. It had been made as God directed Moses, according to the pattern he had seen.
|
| 45 |
Having received the tabernacle, our fathers under Joshua brought it with them when they took the land from the nations God drove out before them. It remained in the land until the time of David,
|
| 46 |
who enjoyed God's favor and asked that he might provide a dwelling place for the God of Jacob.
|
| 47 |
But it was Solomon who built the house for him.
|
| 48 |
“However, the Most High does not live in houses made by men. As the prophet says:
|
| 49 |

But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God.

“Look,” he said, “I see heaven open and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.”
|
| 57 |
At this they covered their ears and, yelling at the top of their voices, they all rushed at him,
|
| 58 |
dragged him out of the city and began to stone him. Meanwhile, the witnesses laid their clothes at the feet of a young man named Saul.

While they were stoning him, Stephen prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.”
|
| 60 |
Then he fell on his knees and cried out, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” When he had said this, he fell asleep.

“The next day he visited them again and saw two men of Israel fighting. He tried to be a peacemaker. 'Men,' he said, 'you are brothers. Why are you fighting each other?'

“But the man in the wrong pushed Moses aside. 'Who made you a ruler and judge over us?' he asked.
|

'Are you going to kill me as you killed that Egyptian yesterday?'
|
| 29 |
When Moses heard that, he fled the country and lived as a foreigner in the land of Midian. There his two sons were born.

“So God sent back the same man his people had previously rejected when they demanded, 'Who made you a ruler and judge over us?' Through the angel who appeared to him in the burning bush, God sent Moses to be their ruler and savior.

And by means of many wonders and miraculous signs, he led them out of Egypt, through the Red Sea, and through the wilderness for forty years.

They told Aaron, 'Make us some gods who can lead us, for we don't know what has become of this Moses, who brought us out of Egypt.'

So they made an idol shaped like a calf, and they sacrificed to it and celebrated over this thing they had made.
|
| 42 |
Then God turned away from them and abandoned them to serve the stars of heaven as their gods! In the book of the prophets it is written, 'Was it to me you were bringing sacrifices and offerings during those forty years in the wilderness, Israel?
|
| 43 |
No, you carried your pagan gods– the shrine of Molech, the star of your god Rephan, and the images you made to worship them. So I will send you into exile as far away as Babylon.'
|
| 44 |
“Our ancestors carried the Tabernacle with them through the wilderness. It was constructed according to the plan God had shown to Moses.
|
| 45 |
Years later, when Joshua led our ancestors in battle against the nations that God drove out of this land, the Tabernacle was taken with them into their new territory. And it stayed there until the time of King David.
|
| 46 |
“David found favor with God and asked for the privilege of building a permanent Temple for the God of Jacob.
|
| 47 |
But it was Solomon who actually built it.
|
| 48 |
However, the Most High doesn't live in temples made by human hands. As the prophet says,
|
| 49 |
'Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool. Could you build me a temple as good as that?' asks the LORD. 'Could you build me such a resting place?
|
| 50 |
Didn't my hands make both heaven and earth?'
|
| 51 |
“You stubborn people! You are heathen at heart and deaf to the truth. Must you forever resist the Holy Spirit? That's what your ancestors did, and so do you!
|
| 52 |
Name one prophet your ancestors didn't persecute! They even killed the ones who predicted the coming of the Righteous One– the Messiah whom you betrayed and murdered.
|
| 53 |
You deliberately disobeyed God's law, even though you received it from the hands of angels.“
|
| 54 |
The Jewish leaders were infuriated by Stephen's accusation, and they shook their fists at him in rage.
|
| 55 |
But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, gazed steadily into heaven and saw the glory of God, and he saw Jesus standing in the place of honor at God's right hand.
|
| 56 |
And he told them, “Look, I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing in the place of honor at God's right hand!”
|
| 57 |
Then they put their hands over their ears and began shouting. They rushed at him
|
| 58 |
and dragged him out of the city and began to stone him. His accusers took off their coats and laid them at the feet of a young man named Saul.

Then fled Moses at this saying, and was a stranger in the land of Madian, where he begat two sons.

And when forty years were expired, there appeared to him in the wilderness of mount Sina an angel of the Lord in a flame of fire in a bush.

When Moses saw it, he wondered at the sight: and as he drew near to behold it, the voice of the Lord came unto him,
|
| 32 |
Saying, I am the God of thy fathers, the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. Then Moses trembled, and durst not behold.
|
| 33 |
Then said the Lord to him, Put off thy shoes from thy feet: for the place where thou standest is holy ground.
|
| 34 |
I have seen, I have seen the affliction of my people which is in Egypt, and I have heard their groaning, and am come down to deliver them. And now come, I will send thee into Egypt.
|
| 35 |
This Moses whom they refused, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge? the same did God send to be a ruler and a deliverer by the hand of the angel which appeared to him in the bush.
|
| 36 |
He brought them out, after that he had shewed wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, and in the Red sea, and in the wilderness forty years.
|
| 37 |
This is that Moses, which said unto the children of Israel, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear.
|
| 38 |
This is he, that was in the church in the wilderness with the angel which spake to him in the mount Sina, and with our fathers: who received the lively oracles to give unto us:
|
| 39 |
To whom our fathers would not obey, but thrust him from them, and in their hearts turned back again into Egypt,
|
| 40 |
Saying unto Aaron, Make us gods to go before us: for as for this Moses, which brought us out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him.
|
| 41 |
And they made a calf in those days, and offered sacrifice unto the idol, and rejoiced in the works of their own hands.
|
| 42 |
Then God turned, and gave them up to worship the host of heaven; as it is written in the book of the prophets, O ye house of Israel, have ye offered to me slain beasts and sacrifices by the space of forty years in the wilderness?
|
| 43 |
Yea, ye took up the tabernacle of Moloch, and the star of your god Remphan, figures which ye made to worship them: and I will carry you away beyond Babylon.
|
| 44 |
Our fathers had the tabernacle of witness in the wilderness, as he had appointed, speaking unto Moses, that he should make it according to the fashion that he had seen.
|
| 45 |
Which also our fathers that came after brought in with Jesus into the possession of the Gentiles, whom God drave out before the face of our fathers, unto the days of David;
|
| 46 |
Who found favour before God, and desired to find a tabernacle for the God of Jacob.
|
| 47 |
But Solomon built him an house.
|
| 48 |
Howbeit the most High dwelleth not in temples made with hands; as saith the prophet,
|
| 49 |
Heaven is my throne, and earth is my footstool: what house will ye build me? saith the Lord: or what is the place of my rest?
|
| 50 |
Hath not my hand made all these things?
|
| 51 |
Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye.
|
| 52 |
Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? and they have slain them which shewed before of the coming of the Just One; of whom ye have been now the betrayers and murderers:
|
| 53 |
Who have received the law by the disposition of angels, and have not kept it.
|
| 54 |
When they heard these things, they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed on him with their teeth.
|
| 55 |
But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up stedfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God,
|
| 56 |
And said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God.
|
| 57 |
Then they cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and ran upon him with one accord,
|
| 58 |
And cast him out of the city, and stoned him: and the witnesses laid down their clothes at a young man's feet, whose name was Saul.
|
| 59 |
And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.
|
| 60 |
And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep.
